I wouldn't wish what happened to the miners in Chile on anyone. But let's face it, it's a dangerous job and this is one possible outcome. And Chilean flags everywhere? What exactly is there for Chile to be proud of? Couldn't Chile have been more proactive and prevented this horrific situation in the first place? Not to mention that Americans, not Chileans, had to be recruited to rescue these miners. What, exactly, did Chile do for them? The President shows up for a photo op? The President of Bolivia shows up for a photo op? And what kind of person is watching the live coverage of the rescue? Why? I mean, it's one thing if a family member or a loved one is down there, but let's face it, people we will never meet get hurt, trapped and killed every day all around the world. What is so fascinating about this?
chile miner rescue
hi tom.....love your show the old one and looking for the new one also...but this time i
would point out that people empathize with the miners and their families..the desperate struggle...the pain...uncertainty...and the drama attracts interest...around the world...they see the miners as victims....and their families as victims...when it happened in mexico a few years ago an army of family members desperately dug by hand around the clock to help free the miners without success...
Sensasionalists are the only ones that do.
This is obvious because they are only reporting on the negative half of the story, and then stuff their crap full of plugs for advertisers trying to market to idiot consumers in a constant depression, who need to know that someone is worse off then them. A story worth hearing about would be how the country learned from its mistakes and changed its code to prevent this from happening again. You'll never hear about it though because when it comes down to it, they don't care enough about themselves to do something about it. Plus it doesn't sell since the majority are depressed idiots anyways. Why else would all these anti-depressant drugs be so successful?
If you say they don't have enough money to help themselves consider that safety policy is simply words typed on paper.
Chilean Pride....
What exactly is there for Chile to be proud of you are asking? I'm surprised at your question dear Tom...as a wine expert you should know that they are proud of their wines of course....and by the way, half of the fruit you eat everyday comes from Chile....Amen!!!
Chilean Miners
I care like millions of people did. And nothing wrong with the chileans flags everywhere. If this happened in America, I can assure you that would have been big news too. And the Presidents there for the photo op? Well...everyone likes attention...just like you Tom.
Don't care
I was thinking that when I saw it reported on tv. Yeah, they were trapped for a long time. Yeah, it had a happy ending. But, no one wants to admit that they watch for the same reason people watch Nascar and that is the possibility of tragedy.
Chilean Miners
I thought it was a compelling story: Their situation, how they pulled together,
especially during the first 17 days when they didn't know if anyone would ever find
them. That would have driven most people nuts, including me. The way all of them
took on diferent areas of concern to keep sanity going and life, itself. And how they
were finally rescued. The whole process was very interesting and I'm sure a movie
starring George Clooney, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt and the usual suspects is already
in the works.
The non stop coverage of the rescue was a tad over the top, however. I am a FOX
watcher and they covered it all for two days. I'm still recovering from having to miss
two installments of "Red Eye". I was interested in the story but they did lay it on with a
trowel, especially our beloved Geraldo Rivera, as only he can.
I'm sure, even now, Gloria Allred is feverishly trying to get with one of the wives or
mistresses to represent her in the slew of lawsuits which are, no doubt in the works.

Ad as news
I found it to be disgusting that the news did a story about the company that donated sunglasses to the miners for use when they were rescued and bombarded with all of that light! This wasn't news.
Miner Rescue In Chile
I guess I watched it because it's uplifting news in a world full of bad news. Tom's right that the usual DFHO (dog-fuckers & hangers-on) congregated to make the most of a free photo-op. The orthodontically correct president of Chile looked like a nice guy but he really overdid it a bit didn't he? And judging by the hordes of other decidedly clean-hand people (i.e. the ones who didn't actually *do* anything to get the miners above ground) he had lots of company. The only missing publicity-grasper was Al Gore. Perhaps he got wedged in the car door at the airport and missed his flight.
A lot of people like me who tuned in wanted to know the technical details of how to pull off a risky operation that far underground. That's a *long* way down and the details of the winch and cage that I could see looked surprisingly simple. There were some spring-loaded wheels on the sides of the cylindrical cage to keep it centred in the shaft but that was all I could see that looked inventive. I wanted to know if they had any plan for recovery should the cage get stuck half-way down or up. And could they run another cable down if the existing one had problems? Lots of interesting stuff we'll never know by watching mainstream media.
Idiot-box delivery for the drama-addicts
I agree with Tom's observations about the Chilean miner rescue. I believe that many individuals lack excitement or interest in their own lives, and so feel a need to focus on others' drama.
That phenomenon is particularly evident among the generations who thrived on the faux-drama delivered through the idiot-box.
And the individuals responsible for content delivery through those idiot-boxes from the networks NEED to present more faux-drama to those generations for $$$$.
Why do "we" care? Many individuals who have no stake in the game do not....
Being human does not require that "we" care about every incident involving faux-drama - never did and never will. For many individuals, it is enough to care about families, friends, loved ones, and ourselves.
rescue
No doubt, things like this are a good way for the media to distract us from really important topics, like how we are getting screwed over by the government daily.
Agree
I'm glad that those miners were saved. They must went through living hell... but I do agree with Tom. Chileans in the new coverage make it look like they just won the Soccer World Cup. What's up with that?! Are they trying to make it look like it was them who saved the miners by showing the flags everywhere? It was Americans... they should be raising American flags to show appreciation.
We care because we're humans.
We care because we're humans. We have families. We have children. We care because each of us worries about a day we may not return home to hug our sons and daughters. Each of these men had one of those days. But thanks to human ingenuity, perseverance, and commitment, they have been given a second chance.
Quit being a fuddy-duddy. Maybe try smiling. Honestly, you act as though you are the one trapped helplessly in a hole.
"Not to mention that
"Not to mention that Americans, not Chileans, had to be recruited to rescue these miners. What, exactly, did Chile do for them?"
Well, for one, they got them the help and paid for the service, brought the americans that got them out of the hole, when your mom gets sick or something and you call an ambulance would you ask "What did you do for your mom, it's the paramedics that saved her not you?", well you called the ambulance, and had somebody save her, the fact that you don't perform something yourself doesn't mean you didn't help.
chilean rescue
So if you're not interested, don't watch it. What's it to you if others do? Mine safety pretty much sucks all over the place, including in America. No one does these jobs because they have a lot of options... let's face that.
